THOMPSON ESTATE DOMINATES MET EAST REGIONALS PDF Print E-mail

It is always encouraging to see great things from great athletes or up and coming athletes, and the Met East Regionals for both primary & secondary school was a sheer delight to be part of.

Thompson Estate Athletes dominated met east regionals in every possible way that a club can, in multi events, sprints, distance, jumps, throws, hurdles and steeples, in both junior and senior age groups  Such was the efforts put forth, records were broken and 98% of competing athletes from the club have all qualified through to States, which will commence in October.

This has been the largest team we have trained to produce such excellent results, all athletes attained more than what they expected in personal bests or national qualifiers and personal growth in them selves.

It is very rewarding to stand back and see our squad support each other in all aspects as a team should in both junior and senior age groups.  It is a token of what pulling together as a team can result in and also hard work put in over the off season and committment week in week out.

Perhaps other clubs alike can learn a thing or two from this, if we lead by example.

A big thank you must go out to the parents and athletes for your efforts in supporting your children, good sportsmen behaviour at the regional trials, it is great to see even when we are down in some aspects we as a team can still show sportsman like ethics.  Which I think lacks in a great deal of school sports in all aspects or sports in general.

If everyone can keep on building on what you're already doing now, be patient, committed and positive attitude, these will lead to great attributes to help succeed in your goals.

I also must mention another up and coming athlete, Yarnell Fisher in the squad who represented at Met North Regionals who also dominated sprints in 17yrs category, broke the 200m record 21.79sec, which not only gave him a national qualifier, but also now we are moving into world junior level qualifications as well.

The strength of the club is alight, we carry depth and now is the time to keep going to see how far we as a club can go with all of it's athletes for now and the future, but this can only happen if we as members, committee, parents and athletes get behind each other.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT-HOW TO GET YOUNG ATHLETES TO STAY IN SPORTS LONGER PDF Print E-mail

Research shows exactly why young athletes should stay in sports.

That's the word from Paul Caccamo, the Harvard-educated executive director of Up2Us, a national coalition of community sports programs that teaches young athletes life lessons.

"Sports are more than a game; they are a set of life lessons.

Kids growing up without them are really disadvantaged," he says.

The statistics tell you all you need to know about the advantages of participating in athletics, says Caccamo, who received one of Harvard's most prestigious graduate awards for innovation in social-service program design.

"Kids who participate in sports attend school more, are more community and civic minded, get in less trouble, and tend to be more successful in the workplace. They have done studies from corporate leaders in the country: The number who made honor role was less than 20% but those who played sports was 70% - 80%."

Young athletes learn to work together, acquire leadership skills, get a sense of discipline and learn communication skills, Caccamo says. "All of these things are keys to success in the workplace."

So how do you ensure your kids get all these benefits by staying in sports?

To understand why children and teens stay in sports, you have to understand why they drop out. The Number One reason: They're not having any fun. Kids often join sports teams to be with friends and enjoy themselves, but at some point become overwhelmed by the pressure and the focus on winning.

To help ensure your kids stay in sports and enjoy the many benefits:

* Be sure to separate your dreams from your child's. Sometimes parents have different ideas about what they want from their child's sports experience. These ideas can undermine their child's experience.

* Keep your expectations in check. Kids often take on your expectations as their own, and if they don't achieve them, lose confidence.

* Help kids manage their own expectations. If a young athlete begins a basketball game expecting to score 24 points, he's likely to feel frustrated and disappointed.

* Choose coaches and teams carefully. Be sure to interview potential coaches about their philosophy. It's better, especially when children are younger, if coaches focus more on skill-building and on having fun than on winning.
